He said presently there had has been a firm global commitment towards the introduction of alternate fuel and energy sources due to sharp increase in the oil prices and the environment hazards associated with the use of fossil fuels.
He said that recent shift in the climatic patterns, the world over, had warned the industrialised countries to seriously tackle the issue and efforts were then being made for introducing non-traditional energy forms, e g wind energy, solar energy, hydel power etc.
He said on 16th February 2005 the Kyoto Protocol would come in effect and a real impetus would be provided to the renewable energy sector. He said Pakistan had already ratified the Kyoto Protocol under which limits were being placed on green house gases emissions.
Amin Aslam admitted due to lack of finances, institutional capacity and technical knowledge, they had been unable to fully explore that sector in Pakistan but then with the formation of "implementing agency for promotion of renewable energy", better results were expected.
He said the new policy would provide ample opportunities to explore various renewable energy sources to both the private and public sectors.
