The federal cabinet is holding a special meeting on Monday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to discuss the Balochistan situation, official sources told Business Recorder here on Sunday. The sources said that Interior Minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao will brief the cabinet about the measures taken by the Federal and Balochistan governments to protect the vital strategic installations and restore law and order in the troubled areas.

The cabinet is likely to take new political and administrative measures so that the under construction mega projects worth Rs 130 billion in Balochistan are completed in time and the people derive socio-economic benefits from them.

Our Lahore correspondent adds: Talking to journalists at the Lahore Polo Club Federal Information Minister Shaikh Rashid said the Federal Cabinet and Muslim League and its allied groups will meet in the federal capital on Monday to discuss the prevailing situation in Balochistan.

Ruling out the possibility of an army operation in Balochistan, the minister said that the military has only been deployed to safeguard national installations in the province. "We want to settle things in Balochistan amicably, however, if some tribal chief intends to mar economic uplift taking place in the province, he won't be allowed to do so."

Speaking about incidents in Sui gas area Sheikh Rashid said that two First Information Reports (FIR) have been registered in this regard. Talking about the recent statement of President Musharraf on Balochistan, the minister said the president wanted to bring to notice that situation of 1970 did not exist.

Answering a question on state of law & order in Gilgit, Rashid said that criminals involved in recent incidents were expected to be apprehended soon. "The army will also be withdrawn from the Gilgit area," he added.

Answering a question on Baglihar dam he averred that India had disappointed Pakistan on the issue.
