The Inter-ministerial Committee on Cotton Procurement decided on Tuesday that the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) would continue to buy cotton from the ginners in order to stabilise cotton prices in the market. Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan, who is the head of the committee, Food and Agriculture Minister Sikandar Hayat Bosan and Textile Industry Minister Mushtaq Ali Cheema attended the meeting of the Committee

The secretaries of the ministries of Commerce, Food and Agriculture, TCP officials and representatives of growers, ginners, Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) and All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) also participated in the meeting.

The Committee noted with applause that the TCP was aggressively buying cotton to help in stabilising prices in the market to the benefit of the growers and decided that it would continue to buy cotton.

The TCP intervention in the cotton market is basically to ensure the payment of minimum price fixed by the government to the growers.

The Corporation has procured 1.255 million bales so far, while textile mills purchased 9.306 million bales from ginners, and private sector exporters bought 393,664 bales.
