Pakistan on Friday completed its two-year term on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Pakistan was elected in September 2002 along with Angola, Chile, Germany and Spain and began their terms on January 1, 2003. "We complete the Security Council term secure in the belief that Pakistan made a substantive contribution to the cause of international peace and security, consistent with our high ideals and commitment to the Charter principles," said a statement released by the Foreign Office.

"We never shrank from taking independent positions and worked to build unity and consensus in the Council."

The Council took up a wide array of thematic issues and Pakistan made an active, focussed and constructive contribution to the Council's deliberations on all these subjects.

Pakistan's approach in the Council was guided by its abiding commitment to the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter.

Pakistan strongly advocated the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence, right of peoples to self-determination, and full respect for international humanitarian law.

"We are satisfied that our participation enriched the Council's work, both in process and in substance," the statement said.
