Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz spent busy on Monday receiving parliamentarians and senior bureaucrats who visited the Prime Minister House to congratulate him on assumption of the office of prime minister.

In the meetings, which took place in separate groups, the parliamentarians exchanged views with the prime minister on myriads of issues, with release of development funds and cabinet formation topping the list.

Shujaat Hussain, who has 'earned' the title of 'king maker' in the current phase of Pakistan's politics, was not present in the meetings.

The Prime Minister told the parliamentarians that the public representatives should focus on development of their respective constituencies. They should motivate the people to participate in the process of development.

He said they should closely monitor the performance of federal institutions in their respective areas. The public grievances against their departments should be redressed immediately. They should make deliberate efforts to improve the performance of these organisations.

The Prime Minister said that the government would implement development programmes in collaboration with district governments so that the requirements and needs of the area could be kept in view while making development plans.

He asked them to co-ordinate with Nazims and prepare a phased programme for water supply, drainage and health care.

A separate group headed by Ahmad Alam Anwer, MNA, met Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and congratulated him on assumption of the office of Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister told them that agriculture had a pivotal role in the economy. He said, "we have set the target of 8 percent growth in agriculture sector this year. This sector is being given highest priority, along with industry, construction and small and medium industries."

The Prime Minister said that 60 percent of the population is dependent on agriculture, which requires the highest attention of the government. Efforts would be made to provide clean drinking water in the rural areas, which will have direct effect on the health of children.

The development schemes regarding roads, electricity and basic health would be executed jointly with the help of District Governments. Drainage system would be improved and steps would be taken to create more jobs in rural areas so that rural migration is controlled, Shaukat said.

While thanking the civil servants he called them 'key pillars' of government whose role is very critical in implementing the policies of the government. He said that the Government would support them by providing constant training opportunities, so that they can execute government plans in letter and spirit.

The Prime Minister said that there was no dearth of talent in Pakistan "and we have very fine lot of civil servants, but still we are lagging in implementation and execution".

He said, "We have to inculcate performance-driven culture in civil servants with our full focus on results".

The Prime Minister also asked the civil servants to work with devotion and dedication to assist the government in achieving its goals.
