The All Pakistan Women's Association (Apwa) would mark the birth centenary of its founder Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan in a befitting manner.

This was announced by the office-bearers of the organisation, adding that on the occasion an international conference would be organised in February next year in Islamabad.

Apwa Secretary General, Islamabad, Sumaira Khan and Apwa President and Executive Vice-President Begum Tazeen Faridi and Begum Laila Sarfraz discussed the arrangements at a meeting held here on Thursday evening.

It stated that 2005 would be the year of centenary celebrations for late Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan, and the proposed conference would be a tribute to her unceasing efforts for empowerment of women. Sumaira said, "Begum Liaquat had claimed that the Apwa history was the history of the women's movement in Pakistan.

The 2005 will also be a milestone year for Education for All (EFA) and the Millennium Development Goal (MDG)."

Sumaira further pointed out that education, equality and empowerment of women would be the key focus of the three-day moot from February 22 whose inauguration would be performed by the First Lady of Pakistan Begum Sehba Musharraf.

President General Pervez Musharraf will be the chief guest at the concluding session. The keynote speakers at the inaugural session will include Senator Hillary Clinton of the United States, Shirin Ebadi of Iran.

There will be 50 international delegates representing governments, international organisations and civil society besides 200 national delegates.

A documentary film on Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan would also be screened on the occasion.

Sumaira said that after the moot, the Apwa would frame a post-conference strategy to run the organisation on the professional lines.

She said that Begum Raana Liaquat Ali had always emphasised the significance of education and was of the view that educating a woman was like educating a family.

Sumaira stated that health and women empowerment would be the other focus areas of the moot whose opening and closing sessions would be held at the Convention Centre in Islamabad.

She said that various UN agencies would assist monetarily in that respect whereas the corporate sector in the country would also be approached to meet the shortfall.
