Former Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Friday assured Premier-elect Shaukat Aziz of the PML's full support in continuation of economic reforms he had initiated as finance minister.

"I assure him (Aziz) that we (PML) will back him in continuation of his economic reforms agenda," Shujaat said in his briefest ever in-house speech, after National Assembly elected Shaukat as the new leader of the house following a 'noisy' protest and boycott by the combined opposition.

Shujaat, who resigned from the top government slot on Wednesday to clear way for his successor, advised Shaukat Aziz to avoid taking unilateral decisions.

"When a person tries to concentrate all powers on himself, his downfall begins. Shaukat must avoid this practice," advised Shujaat, who will continue to head the ruling PML.

Shujaat, who served as Interior Minister in the cabinet of ex-premier Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif from 1997 to 1999, claimed he advised the same to Nawaz, but the later didn't care and had to pay the price.

Shaukat, who is often dubbed as President General Pervez Musharraf's right man, was also advised by his predecessor to be aware of hypocrites and stay away from sycophants.

Another former Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali expressed his satisfaction over what he termed a 'smooth' transfer of power twice in less then two moths.

Jamali, who according to some circles was forced to step down from premier slot in June this year, asserted that MPs with combined efforts could ensure the continuity of democratic system.

"I think the in-house change is not that much important issue. The real thing is the continuity of system, which is running smoothly with the grace of God," Jamali said.

He applauded the role of General Musharraf in what he termed the revival of democratic system and institutions. Jamali also greeted Shujaat on his 'best performance' as premier during two-month transitional phase.

"President is part of the Parliament and credit for the smooth running of the democratic process must go to him," Jamali appreciated Musharraf, whom he used to call 'his boss' during the days of his premiership.

Shifting the direction of his appreciation from Musharraf to Shaukat, the Jamali said: "Shaukat has worked with me and I was completely satisfied with his performance as finance minister."

Alia Kashif Adds: Meanwhile, Parliamentarians from ruling coalition also greeted Shaukat Aziz and anticipated that the country would make a great economic development under his government.

Former Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed expressed hope that election of Shaukat would bring for Pakistan a new era of speedy economic progress.

"By adopting the policy of co-ordination, co-operation, consultation and consensus, he (Shaukat) can put the country on track of economic prosperity," he said

But at he same time, Rashid also cautioned the newly elected chief executive against the growing unrest among the masses due to price hike, unemployment and law and order situation.

Representing female parliamentarians, Rehana Mushadi asked Shaukat to take pragmatic steps to change the lot of women and help them in securing their due status in the society.

Former Water and Power Minister, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao and minority member Mushtaq Victor also greeted Shaukat and prayed for him a success in future venture.
