The president, Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA), Ahmed Awais, and its other office-bearers said the lawyers community will oppose the proposed bill, amending Bar Council Act, and they will follow the directions and decisions of Joint Action Committee (JAC) to be adopted in its meeting on August 7 at Islamabad.

Addressing a joint press conference here on Monday, they called upon the government to hold an inquiry into the matter of life attempt on a senior lawyer Habib-ul-Wahabul Khairi, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and awarding exemplary punishment in accordance with the law.

They also condemned the action of the government to elevate the judges of the high court against the Supreme Court decision pertaining to the appointment of the judges in the higher courts in accordance with the seniority.

They said the government by the proposed bill, as it wants to keep the bar and the legal fraternity under constant threat, adding that the bench, which failed to protect its own rights, could not protect the rights of the lawyers.

They said that lawyers always fought for the independence of the judiciary, and struggled to strengthen it, but the government wants to create conflicts between the bar and the bench.

LHCBA office-bearers also said that they would not allow the government to create such a situation, adding they will give strong resistance if the government got the proposed amendment passed.

They said that bars would take all necessary steps to compel the government to accept their demands. If the government would get the said amendments passed from the Senate, the lawyers will lock the courts, they warned.
