No permission has been granted to FM Radio channels for airing Indian songs. This was stated by spokesman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) in a statement issued here on Monday, while commenting on a news item published in a section of press.

He said it was surprising that veracity of this news had not been confirmed or corroborated from Pemra.

The spokesman asserted that no change in Pemra's policy in this regard had been made and its rules, regulations, and terms and conditions of license were very clear on this subject.

"The Pemra from its very inception is determined for the promotion and development of electronic media in the country for fostering our own cultural values, while withstanding the negative effects of foreign media", he said.

He explicitly mentioned that government had permitted the establishment of private radio channels in Pakistan for the promotion of local content to educate, inform and entertain public.

The spokesman further said that this news item was based on mala fide intentions and that radio stations which contravened Pemra rules and regulations would sternly be dealt.
