The government has allocated Rs 1 billion for the livestock sector to help develop it on modern lines, said Rana Ijaz Ahmed, Punjab CM's Advisor on law and human rights.

Talking to a delegation of NGOs at his office on Monday, he said the livestock sector can play a key role in national progress by attaining self-reliance in dairy and meat products, adding special facilities have been offered to cattle-breeders at their doorsteps.

He said the provincial government would also ensure provision of necessary medicines and facilities at all veterinary hospitals throughout the province.

Private welfare bodies and NGOs must also play a vital role in livestock development by supplementing government efforts in this sector, he observed, saying that increased production of dairy and meat products would not only fulfil local needs, but also help earn foreign exchange through their export.
