The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has received six bids in response to a tender to import 500,000 tons of wheat between 206.47 dollars and 244.00 dollars per ton C&F, a company official said on Saturday.

"We actually received 12 bids, but six of the participants later pulled out," the official said speaking on condition of anonymity.

The official said the remaining bidders were two US based grain companies, Australian Wheat Board, a Switzerland based firm and two wheat exporters from the United Arab Emirates. "The accumulative quantity they offered is 535,000 tons," he said.

The official said the TCP would evaluate the offers on Sunday and announce the successful bidders on Monday.

Pakistan announced the tender for the import of soft white grain wheat on July 5 as part of its plans to import one million tons of wheat after adverse weather cut the harvest to 19.75 million tons from a target of 20 million tons for 2003-04 crop (Nov-April).

Pakistan plans to beef-up buffer stocks from the import as it has less then half a million tons of wheat in its strategic reserves. It would also bridge the supply gap of around 350,000 tons in its annual domestic demand of over 20 million tons.

The official said the winning bidders would have to start the shipments to Karachi's Port Qasim on a C&F basis by the third week of September.

A new tender for the import of another 500,000 tons of wheat would be made before August 8.

The wheat import plan is Pakistan's first since it rejected cargoes of Australian wheat in February, saying they were infected with karnal bunt fungus - a claim rejected by the Australian government.
