The KCCI managing committee had called the general body meeting of KCCI on Saturday seeking amendment in its constitution to reducing president's office holding tenure from two years to one year.
KCCI had amended its constitution a few years ago in which it allowed the president to hold office for two years, instead of one year, and other office-bearers to hold office for one year.
This year for the first time, in September, KCCI was going to hold elections for president's office for two years. The previous amendment in which KCCI allowed president to hold office for two years was moved at the behest Siraj Kasim Teli and now reverting to one-year term was also initiated on his directive. At present, Teli is holding office of president of KCCI.
A very large number of KCCI members were against this amendment. They said that the Chamber is not a place to make its constitution a mockery.
They criticised amending its constitution on the basis of whim's and wishes of majority without having substantial ground.
Some members scuffled; they broke the doors of KCCI secretary's office and auditorium. A number of members asked KCCI president to hold ballot on the issue.
The president who was chairing the MC meeting directed them to sign the register and those who signed the registered their vote will be counted against the amendment. Those who did not sign the register their vote will be counted in favour of the amendment.
The register was kept in the office of Secretary KCCI. This ruling of the president provoked some of the members and they took the register and ran away.
Teli, while announcing the decision of the house, claimed that 90 percent member did not sign the register and the amendment was carried with majority of votes.
However, the members against the amendment claimed that 70 percent members were with them and no amendment has been carried out. They alleged that uproar in KCCI was at the behest of KCCI president to impose his decision.
Teli said that after the amendment in constitution a few years back it was felt that holding elections of other office-bearers without president would be uninteresting and it was decided to make another amendment in the constitution to elect the president yearly, as was being done previously.
Teli said that they have made the amendment to elect KCCI president for two years but it was soon realised that it was a mistake "and we are taking back our decision".
