The two blasts occurred outside Pakistan American Cultural Centre (PACC) on Fatima Jinnah Road after 22 hours of Karachi port blast, which claimed lives of two drivers near a check post on Tuesday evening.
According to details, the explosions occurred near the United States Consul General's residence and the adjacent Pakistan American Cultural Centre (PACC), with a time difference of about 20 minutes in two separate car bombs blasts with a distance of 20 meters.
The first bomb went off at about 5.05 pm in a car No. ADY-699 (Honda City) that ripped the area, the photographers and TV cameramen reached at the site of blast for coverage, when another car No. GS-4240 parked at a distance of about 15 to 20 meters went-off at about 5.25 pm from the first place of car blast.
As a result of two continuous blasts 34 persons including 12 policemen, 10 media personnel were also injured. The law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area and ambulances rushed to take several injured.
The photographers and cameramen identified as Zia Mazhar (Ummat), Sohail Rafique (Jang), Jamil (Din), Mohammed Azeem (Express), Abbas Mehdi (Online) Naziruddin (The Nation), Shariq (Khabrain), Akbar Baloch (Hilal-e-Pakistan), Sheikh Mehmood (ARY TV) and Amir Qureshi (AFP).
While, the police personnel identified as Town Police Officer Muneer Shaikh, SHO PS Artillery Maidan Irfan (Cobra) including Rana Pervez.
According to police, the injured were immediately rushed to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where Jehangir, a police constable, succumbed to death.
However, 25 injured persons with minor injuries were discharged after providing them first aid except 8 persons including one superintendent of police, one deputy superintendent of police, one police inspector, one sub-inspector and 1 police constable were admitted in two different hospitals. All injured are out of danger, said hospitals officials.
JPMC Deputy Director Dr Seemi Jamali told the newsmen that the police constable Jehangir was arrived at the hospital in critical condition and died of serious wounds.
The SSP (Investigation), Manzoor Mughal told newsmen that the terrorists behind these blasts were belongs to same banned organisation those activists arrested by the police recently.
The personnel of Bomb Disposal Squad were immediately called in to check another parked vehicle No. L-3420 in the area that had created more panic, a police official said. The police have beefed up the security on roads leading to the busy port and started searching snap checking.
Moreover, in a press note issued by the Central Police Office (CPO) on late Wednesday night, disclosed second explosion took place in a car snatched one & half-hour before incident from Bahadurabad PS Area. The mentioned vehicle lying with fake government number plate.
The Inspector General of Police Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah has constituted a high level team to investigate the matter from the all possible aspects. The Investigation team will work under the supervision of Additional IG/CCPO Karachi Asad Ashraf Malik and will be headed by DIGP Investigation Zone-I Fayyaz Ahmed Leghari. The team will comprise of senior police officers. The CID Police and Special Branch Police have been directed to assist the investigation team.
The investigation team has succeeded in preparing sketches of unknown suspect with the help of eyewitnesses and others, which are being issued to press. The Government of Sindh has announced a reward of Rs 10 lacs for any valuable information leading to the arrest of culprits.
APP ADDS: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has condemned incidents of terrorism in Karachi and vowed that perpetrators of the heinous acts would be brought to book.
The Prime Minister, who is on a four-day official visit to Saudi Arabia, said these dastardly acts have been carried out by elements, who are against the country's progress and development. "No effort will be spared to punish those behind these cowardly acts," he said. He offered his heartfelt condolences to the families of victims and directed the Sindh Government to provide best possible treatment to the injured for their early recovery.
AFP ADDS: The target of two car bombs that exploded on Wednesday in Karachi killing at least one person and wounding several was a privately run English language school and not the nearby residence of the US consul general in Karachi, an US State Department official said.
The official, citing information from received in Washington from US and Pakistani authorities in Karachi and Islamabad, said the car bombs were aimed at the Pakistan-American Cultural Centre (PACC) which is not affiliated with the United States government.
"We have no connection with this facility," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity. "There are no Americans on its staff and there were no Americans injured."
