President General Pervez Musharraf expressed the hope on Friday that the completion of Gwadar deep sea port project would be a major step toward realising Pakistan's potential as a regional hub of trade and economic activities.

The President, who attended a comprehensive briefing on the Gwadar project and other ongoing development programmes in Balochistan, said that the port will enhance Pakistan's trade and economic relations with countries of Central Asia, the Gulf and Europe.

"By providing access for commercial traffic to and from Central Asia, Gwadar port will serve as a gateway for regional trade and contribute significantly to the collective progress of the region."

He directed that the mega Gwadar project and its supporting infrastructure be completed within the set timeframe.

President Musharraf stated that the completion of Gwadar project will begin a new chapter of development in the country and generate thousands of new jobs for the people of the province.

Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani and Chief Minister of Balochistan Jam Mohammad Yousuf and Deputy Chairman Planning Commission briefed the President about the pace of development projects including the mega Gwadar deep sea port.

They informed the President that the development projects in the province are being pursued consistently and would be completed as per schedule.

The President expressed satisfaction that the provincial government is focusing on the development projects and stated that their completion will lead to socio-economic progress of the people of the province.

The briefing covered progress on all aspects of Gwadar port project including the construction of berths, container berths, bulk cargo terminal, grain terminal, etc and the progress on the construction of Makran coastal highway.

Other development work at Gwadar include power generation projects and major transmission lines including grid stations.
