"Six people were killed and six injured - all construction workers of (various) Asian nationalities," Colonel Saleh Ali al-Mutawa said, adding the injuries were light to medium.
Rescuers had ended their search and he did not expect the toll to rise. The unfinished ceiling of the one-storey building collapsed on the heads of the workers, who were not wearing hard hats, witnesses said.
Mutawa said the ceiling gave way because of shaky support structures. The firm involved would be prosecuted, he said.
