The Punjab government has chalked out a contingency plan to provide medical cover and to meet any emergency situation during the Muharram-ul-Harram. Punjab Minister for Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education Khawaja Salman Rafique has directed the heads of medical education institutions and medical superintendents of the teaching hospitals to ensure arrangements for providing medical cover and to meet any emergency situation during the Muharram-ul-Harram.

While chairing a meeting of the heads of medical universities/colleges and medical superintendents of teaching hospitals, to review the arrangements for providing special medical cover to the participants of mourning processions/Majalis Azha during Ashura Muharram, Salman said that special duties should be assigned to the senior doctors including head of the department for 9th and 10th Muharram-ul-Harram and operation theaters, medical equipments, stock of medicines and blood bags of all groups also be made available in the hospitals.

Secretary SH&ME Najam Ahmad Shah, Special Secretary Health Dr Sajid Mehmood Chohan, Vice Chancellors of Medical Universities, Principals of Medical Colleges, heads of specialized medical institutions and medical superintendents of the teaching hospitals attended the meeting. The participants of the meeting apprised the minister of the arrangements made in their hospitals to ensure proper and prompt medical cover to the patients during the Ashura. The meeting was informed that duty roasters of the doctors, surgeons, senior registrars and head of the department have been finalized. Sufficient stock of the medicines and blood bags is available in the hospitals and donors lists have also been prepared for getting blood donations in case of any need.

Secretary Health Najam Ahmad Shah said that the purpose of holding the meeting is to review the arrangements made by the hospitals administrations for providing the treatment facilities to the patients during Muharram-ul-Harram especially on 9th and 10 Muharram. He said that medical colleges and the teaching hospitals should also chalk out management plan to combat with any untoward incident during these days. Shah directed the administration of medical education institutions and the hospitals to share duty roasters of the health providers with the department.

He said that head of the departments should also be assigned duties and they should be available for supporting their juniors and no doctor should leave his station without prior permission during the holidays of 9th and 10th Muharram. He said that close coordination is essential between hospitals administration and the officials of Rescue 1122 for providing ambulance service to the patients during the Muharram processions especially on Yaum-e-Ashura.
