Three policemen and a boy were killed when gunmen opened fire upon a police van in Korangi area, here on Friday. Police said the incident occurred near Darul Uloom Korangi where six men riding three motorbikes appeared and sprayed volleys of bullets at a police van (No. SP 534A), and fled the scene leaving three officials and a child seriously injured.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Qamaruddin and Constable Babar Ali breathed their last on way to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) while head constable Amjad succumbed to wounds due to massive bleedings during treatment at the same medical facility. A passer-by boy also lost his life; however his identity was not known till filing of this report.

After the targeted attack, a heavy contingent of police and other law enforcement agencies rushed to the scene, cordoned off the area and collected evidence. The deadly attack came after police initiated a combing operation against criminals at Rerhi Goth, Faizur Rehman Goth etc.

Talking to media persons, the Additional IG Ghulam Qadir Thebo apprehended that a terrorist group involved in killing of four policemen in SITE area last month, might have carried out this deadly attack also. He said the slain police officials were not following standard operating procedures as they were not wearing bullet proof jackets at the time of attack. He also suspended the DSP and SHO Awami Colony for their negligence in performance of duties.

Some 40 to 45 empties of 9mm pistols were recovered from the crime spot, said Raja Umar Khitab, incharge of Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). Three kinds of weapons were used by the terrorists during the course of attack, he said. Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair condemned the incident. In a statement, he said, such cowardly attacks were being carried out to destabilize the city peace. He also hailed police for their sacrifices in fight against terrorism and restoration of peace in the metropolis.
