The Punjab Environment Department has bought five monitoring stations for four big industrial cities-Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Chakwal-to measure air pollution. "One air pointer is already installed in Lahore while another has been established near Sahiwal Coal Power Plant for continuous monitoring of air," said Secretary Environment Protection Department Captain Saif Anjum while addressing a meeting of the department here on Thursday.

He said that the department had launched the process of registration of environment consultants while laboratories had also been upgraded. He disclosed that the department was carrying out sampling of waste water in the province so as to take action against the violators of environment law. Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Environment Minister Begum Zakia Shahnawaz stressed the need for using latest technology to arrest environment pollution.

She said the government was trying to create awareness among the masses about protection of environment. She claimed that the department was taking pre-emptive measures to check SMOG in winter season.
