As the first Monsoon currents have started to penetrate in Pakistan and good rains/thundershowers are expected at a number of places in the country, the Punjab government has established a Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) Unit to coop with the dangers of floods. The FRA unit would be responsible to provide prior information about flood by using GIS System and would help complete flood arrangements before the flood. Meanwhile Secretary Irrigation Punjab Cap Asad Ullah Khan (Retd) has directed the field engineers to enhance the patrolling on the canals to ensure the safety and security of the strategic irrigation infra structure in the case of flood.

He stressed to implement the recommendation of Safety Evaluation Cell of Irrigation Department which has been established to ensure the safety of canal system in Punjab.

He gave these instructions while presiding over a meeting held in connection with flood management. Senior officers of the department were also present in the meeting who briefed the secretary about the flood fighting arrangements in the province.

The Secretary said in accordance with the recommendations of Safety Evaluation Cell, all the spurs must be inspected well before flood season while water capacity enhancement through de-silting and elimination of encroachments settled in the way of rivers flow must be ensured by the engineers of the department.

FLOOD WARNING CENTRE WEATHER OUTLOOK

Scattered Wind-thunderstorm/rain with isolated moderate to heavy fall is expected over Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, East Balochistan, adjoining Sindh and Kashmir from 27th-29th June-2017. Very heavy fall at one or two places is also expected from 28th-29th June-2017.

Flooding in Nullahs of rivers Ravi and Chenab along with Hill Torrents of D.G. Khan Division is also expected during the period.

River Kabul at Naushera is in low flood level and all the other major rivers are flowing in their state of normal flow. FFC report added.

In its detailed daily weather report the Meteorological department said on Sunday evening that a westerly wave is affecting upper parts of the county. Monsoon currents will start to penetrate in Pakistan on Monday.

It said rain/dust-thundershowers with gusty winds are expected at isolated places in Zhob, Kalat, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore and Sargodha divisions, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, FATA and Kashmir today. Light rain/drizzle expected at a few places along Sindh coast, hot weather and humidity elsewhere in the country.

Weather Outlook for next 48 hrs:

Validity 0800 PST/27-06-2017 to 0800 PST/28-06-2017) Rain/thundershowers with strong gusty winds are expected at scattered places in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, north-eastern Balochistan, FATA, Islamabad, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Rain-thunderstorm also expected at a few places along Sindh coast, hot and humid weather elsewhere in the country. Sunday's highest maximum temperatures: Sibbi 48°C, Dalbandin, Dadu 47°C, Nukkundi, Bhakkar 45°C.
