Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique will inaugurate at Rawalpindi railway station today (Wednesday). The Railways has decided to induct new rakes of 'Pakistan Express Train' to fulfill its promises for better service delivery to its customers and passengers. The train will operate from Rawalpindi to Karachi via Faisalabad which will unite Sindh with Punjab.

The train will start its journey from Rawalpindi with 11 coaches. Later, eight coaches will be added to the train in Faisalabad. It will reach Karachi with total 19 coaches. Its fare will be very nominal. From Rawalpindi to Karachi only Rs 1400 will be charged and from Rawalpindi to Faisalabad Rs 410 will be charged. Gojar Khan, Jehlem, Lala Musa, Gujrat Wazirabad, Hafizabad, Sangla Hill, Shorkot Cantt, Khanewal, Multan, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Dera Nawab Shah, Khanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Sadiqabad, Rohri, Tandu Adam and Hyderabad will be its approved stops.

It may be mentioned here that all the rakes of Pakistan Express are being replaced with rehabilitated coaches to improve passenger facilitation. The old rakes were equipped with 110 volts power supply vans which will now be switched to 220 volts. This will further improve passenger comfort by providing uninterrupted power supply throughout the journey with dedicated power plant.

The coaches of this train were mostly rehabilitated at Railways Carriage Factory, Islamabad, five to seven years ago, under the project of rehabilitation, Upgradation and conversion. The maintenance of these coaches has recently been carried out at Railways Carriage Shop Mughal Pura, Lahore, for induction to this train. The rehabilitation work involves an overall cost of Rs 11 million per coach against the cost of Rs 80 million for a new coach. As such, the old passenger coaches are rehabilitated and made fit for another lease of 15 years life in only 14% of the cost of new coach. The amount spent on rehabilitation of a passenger coach is recovered within six months of its operation.
