A decline of 1.3 per cent in textile exports was witnessed during January 2017 as against the same month a year ago, as exports contracted to $1.064 billion in Jan 2017 from $1.078bn in Jan 2016. The provisional data of selected commodities, released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), on Thursday, also shows an increase in export of wheat by 476pc over the same month a year ago and 33pc over the previous month. Analysts say that marginal increase in exports during Jan 2017 may be largely due to wheat exports and provision of subsidy on wheat exports by the government.

The exports of raw cotton decreased to $1.069bn in Jan 2017 from $2.128bn in Jan 2016 with a negative growth of 49.77pc, cotton cloth dipped to $185.63 million in Jan 2017 from $191.696m over the same month a year ago, reflecting a decline of 3.10pc. There was a 100pc decline in exports of cotton carded or combed in Jan 2017 over the same month of last fiscal year with no exports were recorded last month against $24,000 for the same month of last year.

The exports of yarn, other than cotton yarn, decreased to $1.260bn in Jan 2017 from $1.943bn in Jan 2016 with a negative growth of 35.15 pc; knitwear exports dropped to $199.647m in Jan 2017 from $206.751m in Jan 2016, reflecting a decline of 3.44pc. Exports of towels decreased to $63.519m in Jan 2017 from $64.392m in Jan 2016, registering a negative growth of 1.36pc; exports of readymade garments fell to $202.015m from $209.560m with a negative growth of 3.60pc.

A decline of 14.11pc in exports of art, silk & synthetic textile was noted in Jan 2017 over the same month of last year subsequence to contraction in exports to $21.943m in Jan 2017 from $25.548m in Jan 2016, while exports of made-up articles (excl. towels) declined to $54.801m in Jan 2017 from $63.252m for the same month a year ago, reflecting a decline of 13.36pc.

However, exports of cotton yarn increased to $92.710m in Jan 2017 from $88.824m in Jan 2016, showing an increase of 4.37pc; bed wear exports increased to $173.225m from $169.538m during the period under review with a growth of 2.17pc. Exports of tents, canvas & tarpaulin increased to $15.488m in Jan 2017 from $11.113m in Jan 2016, reflecting a growth of 39.37pc, while exports of other textile materials increased to $52.824m in Jan 2017 from $43.501m in Jan 2016 with a growth of 21.43pc.
