The district council of Mardan has unanimously passed the annual budget, with a total outlay of Rs 9.314 billion for the financial year 2016-17, while 980 million rupees have been set aside for development projects in the budget. District Nazim Himayatullah Mayar presented the development budget in the district council that was passed by majority of the members of the council. District Naib Nazim Asad Ali chaired the district council meeting.

A big chunk of the district development budget has been earmarked for improving the condition of educational institutions, construction and maintenance of roads network in the district and a sum of Rs 50 million has been allocated for education sector. Presenting the developmental budget, Himayatullah Mayar said the budget was prepared in consultation with opposition members in the district council. "This budget will show that we prefer development projects in Mardan," he said. "We have allocated significant portion of the budget - more than Rs 980 million - for development projects." He said Rs 50 million had been allocated for improving the condition and provision of missing facilities at schools in the district.

An equal amount of Rs 50 million had been set aside for infrastructure development, he said, adding that Rs 20 million would be spent on basic health units and civil dispensaries. Similarly, he said that Rs 2.9 million had been allocated for water and sanitation services, Rs 10 million each for women welfare and agriculture, while Rs 10 million allocated for promotion of sports activities in district.

The district administration will also have Rs 70 million as discretionary funds which will be utilised for infrastructural development in underprivileged areas of the district. This amount would be equally disbursed among the 22 lakh population of the district.

Speaking on the floor of the House, the district Nazim promised to work with full dedication for the well-being of people. He urged the councillors to support the district government in its efforts to restore the glory of Mardan city. Himayatullah Mayar also thanked the opposition members at this occasion for supporting him in preparing the district developmental budget.

The district Nazim said he would make his all-out efforts for improving condition of the educational institutions and health facilities. He said they would try their best to ensure provision of all facilities in the schools and basic health units. He also pledged to promote agriculture and sports in the district. He said they would also include women in the development process and funds would be spent on women development. He added that equal funds were allocated for the government and opposition members in the developmental budget.

He lauded the provincial government's decision to establish a cadet college for women in Mardan. The district Nazim also threw his weight behind plans to widen roads and introduce beautification schemes in the region. The district opposition leader, Shaukat Ali, congratulated the district Nazim and the House for passing such a balanced budget. He also showed gratitude for consulting the opposition leadership and members in the process of making the budget.
