Rejecting Indian allegations regarding an attack across the Line of Control (LoC) on its military patrol, Pakistan on Wednesday expressed readiness for investigations by the United Nations Military Observes Group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP)

The two neighbours accused each other of violating the LoC on Sunday and Tuesday. On Monday, Pakistan summoned the Indian deputy high commissioner, lodging a protest over Indian troops' incursion at a border post in the Hajipir sector along the LoC on Sunday morning that resulted in the killing of a Pakistani soldier. India summoned the Pakistan High Commissioner in New Delhi on Wednesday to protest the alleged "highly provocative" attack on its territory in Jammu and Kashmir by Pakistani troops, describing it as "extremely distressing" and "inhuman"-- the mutilation of the bodies of its two soldiers.

Pakistan, however, rejected the charges, terming them baseless and unfounded allegations. "Pakistan strongly rejects the Indian allegation of an attack across the line of control on its military patrol in which two Indian soldiers were claimed to have been killed," a Foreign Office statement said on Wednesday.

The Foreign Office's spokesperson said that Pakistan was prepared to hold investigations through the UNMOGIP on the recent ceasefire violations. He said that Pakistan "remains committed to the ceasefire agreement of 2003 which is an important Confidence Building Measure and should be respected in letter and spirit".

"Pakistan also urges the need for abiding and strengthening existing military mechanisms to ensure that there is no recurrence of such violations in future," the spokesman added. "Pakistan is committed to a constructive, sustained and result-oriented process of engagement with India," he said, adding that the two sides had made significant progress in the dialogue process.

He said that Pakistan had taken a number of steps to normalise bilateral relations and stressed the need for serious efforts by both sides to avoiding negative propaganda. Meanwhile, in a TV interview, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar rejected the Indian claim that the Pakistan Army was responsible for the killing two Indian soldiers on the Indian side of the LoC. She said that Pakistan had ordered an independent investigation, adding: "We are offering more: let a third party investigate the issue."
