Federal Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Kaira on Tuesday rejected the notion that general election would be delayed or not held. According to him, general election is likely to be held in May next year. Speaking to senior journalists here, the minister averred that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would hold election for which relevant constitutional powers had been delegated to it.

He said it would be a great test of ECP to hold election in a free, fair and transparent manner, adding that it was the prerogative of the ECP to form a caretaker government. The Information Minister said that under the 18th Amendment, the ECP enjoyed these powers. Applauding the vision of President Asif Ali Zardari, he said that politics of conciliation had been promoted for national consolidation. Talking on the issue of Asghar Khan case, he said that it would have been better if the court had also defined the sentences.
