While mobile telephone connections in Pakistan have gone up to over 9.7 million, according to official figures, the actual service quality of cellular phones is gradually suffering from company to company, reports UPP correspondent. The concerned regulatory authority has also reportedly issued several warnings to the mobile phone service providers to improve the quality of their service. Frequent mobile telephone users complain that the biggest hurdle they face especially during peak call hours is the overloading of the system with the cryptic reply: "Please dial later."

Insiders say that the service providers know that the system is overloaded but have done little so far to improve the situation.

The subscribers say the quality of service is different from company to company and three particular brands of service providers are 'definitely overloaded'.

Sometimes the users have to wait of many long minutes before they can get their desired numbers.

The service providers are of the view that the usage of mobile phones is increasing due to many incentives being provided.

However, the users are in agreement on one point that the mobile telephone has increased the connectivity and also reduced the paperwork that was involved in getting a fixed line connection from the PTCL.

Various mobile telephone operators in the country claim that they have big expansion projects in hand and would also increase the connectivity without delay for callers.

Various business groups, interviewed by the UPP correspondent, say that the mobile telephone is definitely 'a blessing' for their business because it ensures connectivity round the clock. They also note that the cost of mobile telephone sets, due to competition in the international market, is coming down every day as is evident from prices for various mobile telephones offered in the market.

However, they point out that the efforts should be now for offering better and efficient service.

Various estimates place the number of mobile telephone connections rising to over twelve million in the next three years in the country.
