Chairman, Pakistan Tanners Association, S.M. Naseem has appreciated the financial co-operation extended by European Union (EU) to provide 22.9 million Euro for livestock development in Pakistan.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, he eulogised these activities aimed at improving the livestock sector of the country, specially the key areas such as animal production and marketing with emphasis on animal disease control and its nutrition.

The proposed project would definitely help the economy of the country to grow and to meet the requirement of milk, meat, hides and skins etc.

He said that his association had already, time and again drawn the attention of the government towards establishment of good cattle farming on scientific pattern and skill-full flaying.

The financial assistance by EU, coupled with some contribution from Pakistani government would certainly go a long way in achieving the desired target to develop a standard livestock sector for multiple purpose, he reiterated.

He further added that all these productive activities would also benefit the tanning industry by meeting requirement of quality skin and hides through slaughtering of healthy animals in sufficient quantity at reasonable rates, facilitating tanner exporters to meet the requirement of finished leather for customers of EU and other countries.

He suggested that steps should also be taken to control smuggling of live animal and to retain them for adequate availability of meat and hides and skins for the tanning industry of the country at reasonable price.

He emphasised on the early implementation of the proposed project as at present around 20 percent production capacity was lying idle in tanning industry.

He observed that the tanning industry and leather sector had potential for further expansion provided steps were taken to improve the quality of hides and skins through the breeding of healthy and more animals.

He hoped that the government would also hire the services of experts, designers and technicians for quality improvement in tanning industry.
