The export value of textile items to quota countries has recorded an increase of 18.91 percent to $ 2,769 billion during the year 2003 with the likelihood to rise further.

According to the quota utilisation report compiled by Textile Quota Management Directorate (TQMD) here on Thursday for the year ending December 31, 2003 the export quantity has also surged by 9.65 percent to 3.727 million square meters during the same period.

In the year 2002, Pakistan had exported 3.3.93 million square meters of textile items worth $ 2.345 billion.

The highest increase in value was witnessed in Turkey with 60.75 percent followed by EU at 25.59 percent and USA 10.16 percent over 2002.

Similarly, the highest rise in terms of quantity was recorded in Turkey with 52.64 percent followed by EU at 10.53 percent.

An official of TQMD said that the increase in export value is a direct result of a rise in value addition as Pakistan exported more of a value added items than yarn and grey cloth.

The overall unit price has also registered an increase of 8.25 percent, thanks to rise in unit price in USA and European Union (EU) by 15.57 percent and 12.70 percent respectively.

The average unit price in USA has increased from $ 1.23 per square meters in 2002 to $ 1.42 per square meters during 2003.

Similarly, average unit price in the EU has increased from 51 cents per square meters in 2002 to 57 cents per square meters in 2003.

In Canada and Turkey, the unit price increased from $ 1.17 and 29 cents in 2002 to 1.20 and 30 cents in 2003 respectively.

The official said that the value is expected to rise further as the final shipment reports will be compiled by January 10, 2004.

"The total value is likely to touch 2.9 to $ 3 billion for the year 2003 as shipments were still in the pipeline," the official added.

However, he said that the utilisation of quota was slow in USA and Canada but higher in EU and Turkey.

In USA and Canada, the quota utilisation was recorded at 73.26 percent and 56.49 percent during 2003 as compared to 83.09 percent and 67.29 percent respectively in the year 2002.

The utilisation in EU and Turkey was higher at 78.19 percent and 66.43 percent as compared to 73.93 percent and 46.97 percent in 2002.
