I was shocked to read in the Business Recorder of 23 December 2003 that the government of Pakistan is still in the process of preparing to face the challenge of the World Trade Organisation regime (WTO Regime) which will be implemented from 2005.

The time is not too far and seems in sufficient to remove the chronic shortcomings of our economy.

The government should take up this issue on a war footing basis because 2005 is too close and we need to do a lot to put our economy and business at par with the WTO requirements.

At unplanned and slow move will cause our economy to collapse just as an unexpected hurricane sweeps away an established town.

There are so many questions to be answered before the implementation of WTO requirements.

First of all, newspapers and other media have kept about talking the WTO regime and its dire consequences but has never discussed the way it should be.

Frankly speaking, it is not yet clear, even to the executors of those WTO requirements ie trade, commerce and industry, what the real requirements of WTO are, how far will they affect and their non-implementation damage the economy and business, what management strategies should be adopted to address these problems etc.

I suggest that the government of Pakistan should take up this issue before it is too late and take the following steps:

1. Create awareness among the masses, specially those who are going to be affected, through strong media, newspapers, TV, Radio, seminars etc, about the WTO requirements, their challenges and dire consequences, which are going to be affected and how they will be saved from the menace.

2. Offer government help to those who have limitations in the implementation of WTO requirements.

3. Guide the business sector and other possible victims in the implementations of WTO requirements.

If we will fail in the implementation of WTO requirements on time, we will have to face a doomsday-like situation for our growing economy and business.
