A team of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority along with PTCL and police officials has raided a private 'Gateway Exchange' operating illegally and offering international calls, bypassing the phone utility's Gateway Exchange.

According to press release issued on Monday by PTA, the Regional Director of PTA, Rizwan Hyderi, ASP Kashif Kanjoo of Saddar Police Station accompanied by PTCL officials carried-out a raid on an illegal gateway exchange being operated at Room No 1513, 15th floor, Scissor Tower Shahrah-e-Faisal and arrested a person identified as Nadeem Saleem.

The accused told that the system was operating since July 2003 with Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connection of 128 KB obtained from Multi Net.

The raiding party confiscated following equipment used to extend the facility of International calls: Quantum Gateway Switch, Server & CPU, 8 cellular lines and allied equipment for using Mobile Sim to terminate the international calls and cellular Sims.

The exchange operating through an illegal gateway exchange by Ahmed & Ahmed Communications caused an estimated loss of Rs 90 million to the national exchequer in last six months.

The FIR was lodged at the Saddar Police Station for further investigations.

It may be mentioned here that Ahmed & Ahmed Communication has a co-ordinate group with the help of which the company is also operating the same business in Lahore and Islamabad.

The initial investigation from the arrested person revealed that one of the co-accused, named Yasir, has proceeded two days ago to open a new office in Peshawar, while one of the accused, Asif, fled away from the scene.

The PTA and PTCL are also arranging to raid Lahore and Islamabad offices of the said company.
