Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific said Friday it is in talks with Washington on implementing a US recommendation for foreign airlines to deploy air marshals on flights amid fears of possible terror attacks.

Cathay's corporate communication manager, Lisa Wong, said the Hong Kong-based airline received a directive with the recommendation from Washington on Tuesday and was "still trying to understand and talk the issue through with Washington."

Washington issued the emergency directive on Monday asking all foreign carriers to place armed sky marshals on flights deemed by US officials to be at risk of possible terror attacks.

"However the directive had no specific time line for the implementation of its recommended measures," Wong noted.

Cathay would continue to hold talks with Washington and Hong Kong's government to clarify and understand the issue, she said.

In the meantime, Cathay's scheduled flights to the United States would remain unchanged, Wong added.

Cathay currently operates passenger flights to three US cities: Los Angeles (14 flights a week); San Francisco (7); and New York (7). Cathay also operates six cargo flights a week to Chicago.

Since the devastating terror attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, Cathay has implemented tighter security checks at flight check-in areas and reinforced cockpit doors on board on its aircraft to prevent possible terror attacks.
