The Government of Pakistan has allowed tariff concession on the import of 200 Chinese items from January 1, 2004. The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has issued an SRO (I)/2003 here on Thursday to reduce customs duty on the import of Chinese items under Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA).

The agreement was signed between Pakistan and China during President Pervez Musharraf's last visit to China.

The CBR has notified reduction in the customs duty on the import of 75 types of Chinese seafood, electric train, driving bogies, television camera tubes, airbrakes, sewing machines, grinding or polishing machines, tiles/pipes, silkworm, paper and paperboard, glycerol and other items.

At the same time, China will also notify tariff concession on the import of 777 items from Pakistan.

As per the SRO, reduction in duty on the goods imported from China will be in conformity with the Rules of Origin issued by the Commerce Ministry.

The CBR has used powers under Section 19 of the Customs Act, 1969 to exempt Chinese goods, falling under H.S. Code of the First Schedule of the Customs Act, 1969, from customs duty as in excess of duty specified in the notification.
